Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis

Modernized AGLC’s B2B wholesale experience with Sitecore, OrderCloud, Next.js, and Vercel to improve performance, self-service, and operations for licensed retailers

About the client

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis is the Government of Alberta’s crown commercial enterprise and agency responsible for regulating and managing gaming, liquor, and cannabis in Alberta. AGLC supports public programs and services through its commercial operations and distributes about $500 million in product each year to licensed retailers across the province.

Challenge

AGLC’s wholesale commerce experience was running on a legacy platform built on Sitecore Experience Platform and Sitecore Experience Commerce 9.3, hosted in Microsoft Azure as a platform-as-a-service environment. The platform supported high-volume business-to-business operations, but it had become harder to maintain and less flexible over time. AGLC needed a modern, scalable foundation that could improve performance, simplify content and commerce management, and support more self-service capabilities for retailers and internal teams.

Solution

XCentium partnered with AGLC to migrate the wholesale experience to a composable Sitecore stack using SitecoreAI and Sitecore OrderCloud. The new architecture replaced the legacy commerce platform with a headless, software-as-a-service foundation designed to support long-term flexibility and growth.

XCentium built the business-to-business storefront and admin portal using Next.js and hosted both on Vercel. This supported faster deployment pipelines, improved performance, and a more maintainable front end.

The platform was integrated with key back-office systems for pricing, inventory, fulfillment, payments, orders, and returns. It also connects with Connect Logistics Services, J.D. Edwards, Microsoft Dynamics CRM, and SendGrid for transactional emails. XCentium added self-service enhancements to the admin portal, quick order upload forms for retailers, and support for Return Merchandise Authorizations.

Outcomes

The modernized platform improved the experience for internal teams and retailer partners. Stakeholders and retailers cited better speed, ease of use, and reliability. Marketing and product teams also gained more agility to launch updates with less dependency on IT.

The new cloud-native foundation gives AGLC a more flexible platform for future enhancements, additional self-service workflows, and reduced platform overhead. The work also continued XCentium’s five-plus year digital partnership with AGLC.
