Card Kingdom - Accessibility and Compliance

Strengthened accessibility and WCAG AA 2.1 compliance across Contentstack ecommerce experiences through remediation, screen reader validation, and keyboard navigation improvements.

About the client

Card Kingdom is a premier online destination for Magic: The Gathering cards, decks, and collectibles. Founded in Seattle in 1999, the family-owned company has built a strong reputation within the trading card community through its customer experience and passion for the game.

To support a more inclusive digital experience, Card Kingdom partnered with XCentium to improve website accessibility and align its ecommerce experience with accessibility standards.

Challenge

Card Kingdom engaged XCentium after an accessibility lawsuit identified significant usability barriers for people relying on assistive technologies. An accessibility audit uncovered issues that affected critical ecommerce functions, including inaccessible “Add to Cart” functionality, inconsistent keyboard navigation, poor focus management, and missing screen reader announcements.

These issues created friction across the shopping journey and prevented some users from independently browsing products, managing carts, and completing checkout. The accessibility gaps also introduced legal, operational, and reputational risks tied to non-compliance.

Solution

XCentium implemented a comprehensive accessibility remediation strategy focused on improving usability across major ecommerce workflows. The team corrected color contrast issues, added accessible labels to buttons, links, and images, and improved keyboard navigation and focus management throughout the site.

To improve content operations, XCentium redesigned the content model using structured, reusable components. Shared content and global fields could now be centrally managed and dynamically referenced across the site. This reduced duplication, simplified updates, and improved consistency across digital experiences.

The “Add to Cart” functionality was remediated to support both keyboard and screen reader users, enabling independent completion of a core shopping action. Error handling and status messaging were also updated so assistive technologies could properly announce confirmations, alerts, and validation feedback.

To validate improvements, XCentium combined automated accessibility scanning with manual testing and assistive technology reviews. Deque Axe DevTools Pro and Lighthouse were used for automated audits, while NVDA and manual keyboard testing verified screen reader behavior, focus order, and modal interactions.

The project covered major user journey pages, including Home, Sign-In, Product Listing Pages, Product Detail Pages, My Account, Cart, Checkout, Search, and Order History.

Outcomes

The accessibility improvements significantly enhanced the experience for users with disabilities and established a stronger foundation for ongoing compliance management. Core ecommerce interactions became more accessible, reducing friction for keyboard and screen reader users throughout the shopping journey.

The project also established accessibility testing processes and baseline metrics that Card Kingdom can use to track progress and maintain compliance over time. Remaining usability issues were identified and prioritized for future remediation work.
